Week of October 28th

First Grade Families,
We appreciate the time and effort you have put forth to help make our Read-A-Thon a success. This even culminates this Thursday with our Literary Character Dress up Day. If you have any questions regarding this please reach out to your child's teacher.

The Winter Concert is coming up!  Here is the information everyone should know:
1.  The concert is MANDATORY – if a student cannot come for an unavoidable reason, their family must inform me TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE (October 29th) so they can be given a substitute assignment.  If a student is sick the day of the concert, the family must send a message that day informing me.  If a student does not attend the concert and no explanation is given, they receive a failing grade for the concert.
2.  DRESS CODE: Students must wear black on bottom, white on top.  Black shoes, black pants (black skirt option for girls), black socks/tights, white shirt, and a tie for boys (bowtie is fine). Tie optional for K-2. Color/pattern of your choice. No pop culture.
3.  Times and Location (please note student call times): Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

Our October Poem is:

The Swing by Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasentest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

Week of October 14th

Welcome back to school first grade families! We hope you all had a restful week off and are ready to dive into our second quarter! Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat for conferences these pasts few days. The partnership between teacher and parent is so vital and we are humbled by everything you have done for your child as well as the classroom. Our next big day will be Literary Character Day on October 31st. If you have not already done so please ensure that you send in the approval slip for your child. If you have lost it please email your child's teacher directly for approval. Many characters cross over from the pop culture of Disney to classic fairy tale. These characters are appropriate, however please avoid costumes with Disney emblems or anything manufactured as Disney. We love seeing pieced together representations of all of our princesses!

First grade will be easing into the second quarter with only reading homework this week. We will be introducing new phonograms and reviewing proper letter formation.

In literature we will begin Sleeping Beauty and taking a closer look at story elements. This week we will focus on sequencing events.

Unit 6 in math focuses on numbers to twenty. This week's lessons will cover counting to twenty and number order.

During science we will continue to learn about habitats. This week we discuss the forest and will construct an owl book.

History continues to lead us through exciting events in ancient Egypt. We will learn who King Tut was and how Howard Carter's discovery of the tomb led to fame for this "boy king"

We are looking forward to a happy and healthy remainder of the week with your children!
